Install apps, and sideload the ones that are missing
Google Play first, APK files second, and how to keep sideloaded apps updated.
1 minute read
01From Google Play
The OSM X1 ships with Google Play, so most apps install exactly as they do on an Android phone. Open the Play Store from the home row, search, and select Install. Apps update themselves in the background.
Some apps publish a separate television build. Search from the box rather than pushing the phone version from another device, so you get the version designed for a remote.
02Sideloading an APK
- 1Open Settings, then Security & Restrictions, and allow installation from unknown sources for the file manager or browser you will use.
- 2Download the APK to a USB stick, or fetch it directly using the built-in file manager.
- 3Open the file and confirm the install prompt.
- 4Turn the unknown-sources permission back off afterwards.
Sideload carefully
Sideloaded apps do not update through Google Play and are not scanned by Play Protect. Only install files from the developer's own site, and check for new versions yourself.
03If an install fails
- Check free space in Settings, Storage. Installs fail silently when the box is nearly full.
- Clear the Play Store cache, then restart the box.
- Confirm the app is available in your country — regional catalogues differ.
- Confirm the app supports Android 14. A handful of older applications have not been updated.
